Soyeon Kim works as a playwright, director, and performer in her art practice, and it led her to be curious about the borderline among those positions.
She has always been interested in metaphorically conveying narratives with dramatic expressions.
One of her artworks, ‘Two Suns, is an example of how she creates her world by writing scripts and directing. The script which was derived from the social issues, transformed into surreal illustrations including the fairy-tale village in 'Two Suns', and mythical elements such as mysterious stag, and virtual characters.
In the process of making narrative videos, her main concern is how to lead participants to engage in her art practice.
So before filming, Soyeon and participants meet several times to practice movements, and also include times for discussion about the issue; the base of this story. It appears in a variety of ways, such as a debate on a specific topic or sharing personal experiences, and also, when it comes to the professional way they impart their analysis about the character’s lines during the read-through.
Consequently, this brings the effect of the participants playing the role of actors and performers at the same time by adding their autonomous voices over the characters in scripts. Through this process, she questions the grey area between an actor and a performer
This whole process affects her stage-making. She considers the base of the set and DIY style props that makes her contents more like a mythic being as she writes the script.
However, those are constantly developed by sharing ideas with her coworkers and it shows how cooperative concept takes an essential part in her work because she perceives the entire process of creating artworks as a crusade, as the process entails the engagement of people to seek political, social, and cultural changes.
Lately, Soyeon Kim is attempting to broaden her art practice with the use of digital platforms and methods covering all dimensional expressions as an extension of her pursuit of the “borderless” concept.
